the past that its agreement with China on bishop appointments "does not
touch on diplomatic or political matters," after it was announced that
the compromise provisional deal will be extended for the second time. The
Holy See is one of 14 sovereign entities that maintain full diplomatic
ties with Taiwan, and is the only European state to do so, but its
relations with Beijing have warmed under the leadership of Pope Francis
