Lanao del Sur officials, meanwhile, have urged President Duterte to put in place safeguards against abuses in case he gets an extension of martial law until the end of the year from Congress. Marawi City Bishop Edwin dela Peña urged President Rodrigo Duterte not to extend martial law anymore, saying the remaining threat the Maute group and its allies posed could be addressed without martial law. “I am against the extension of martial law,” Dela Peña told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
