Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, president of the
U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), responded to the shooting
at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South
Carolina, with “grief and deep sadness,” June 19. He said the Catholic
