China: Ban on Tibet Religious Activity Toughened

hrw.org
Scrap Limits on Former Officials’ Freedom of Religion.  A Chinese Communist Party notice banning retired Tibetan government employees from taking part in religious activities violates China’s commitment to religious freedom, Human Rights Watch said today. The notice obtained by Human Rights Watch is undated but appears to have been issued in early August 2019. The notice requires all Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) government and party offices in charge of retired government employees – regardless of whether those retirees are party members – to submit a list by August 18 of any “retired personnel performing the kora,” the Tibetan practice of (...)

AsiaNews

(Bhadra Sharma and Kai Schultz) A few years ago, Kami Rita Sherpa, a veteran climber and guide, met with a gruesome sight at Mount Everest Base Camp. Human bones poked from the ground, smooth and ice-crusted. It was not a fluke. Subsequent seasons yielded more remains — a skull, fingers, parts of legs. Guides increasingly believe that their findings fit into a broader development on the world’s highest mountain: A hotter climate has been unearthing climbers who never made it home. “Snow is melting and bodies are surfacing,” said Mr. Sherpa, who has summited Everest 24 times, a world record. “Finding bones has become the new normal for us.” In the last few seasons, climbers say they have seen more bodies lying on the icy slopes of Everest (...)

The New York Times

Crisis of faith - Tibetan Catholics face modernity in China village
Reuters
(Joyce Zhou and Christian Shepherd) Ruanna, a 77-year-old Tibetan woman living in a remote Chinese village overlooking the Mekong river, says her Catholic faith has never been in doubt. "Since birth, I have attended church and read holy scriptures in Tibetan," Ruanna said in her home of Cizhong, where Christmas celebrations are on par with Lunar New Year festivities. Despite the devotion of older Catholics, church leaders and some parents say it is less so among younger villagers. (...)

Buddhist monks to consider whether Dalai Lama should reincarnate

RNS
(Meagan Clark and Vishal Arora)  Tibetan Buddhist monks from around the world are gearing up to discuss whether the aging Dalai Lama should reincarnate — and, if he does, then how to prevent Beijing from claiming that Tibet’s next spiritual leader will reincarnate in China. The monks had been scheduled to congregate in the Himalayas of northern India this week to deliberate on the issue at the 13th Religious Conference on Tibetan Buddhism beginning Thursday (...)

(Margery Eagan) Late last month Thomas Keating, a Catholic spiritual giant, died at age 95. Most Catholics have no idea who he was, which is our loss. Catholics need some spiritual uplift about now. The sex abuse cover-up rages on. Catholic culture wars divide us as surely as Donald Trump divides America: conservatives cling to rules; liberals want none. We’d all like more inspiration and Masses where the music won’t make you cringe. But Thomas Keating was about something else entirely: deepening faith, a joyful faith. That was central to his teaching, his many books, and to Contemplative Outreach, the organization he founded in the 1980s which now claims tens of thousands of adherents in 39 countries. (...)

The Dalai Lama, the exiled supreme leader of Tibetan Buddhism, said Nov. 5 that the selection of his successor could be done in a way the pope is selected by the Catholic Church in an election by cardinals. "The kind of pope system is ... possible to choose among the high lama, or high scholars," the 83-year-old Dalai Lama said in an interview with the Mainichi Shimbun and other media outlets. He said naming his successor by himself is "also possible," explaining that there were some precedents of past leaders making selections while they were still alive.  (...)
