Una realtà stigmatizzata dalla Commissione delle Nazioni Unite sui diritti dell’uomo per il Sudan del Sud che rileva anche la «preoccupante» lentezza con cui nel Paese si procede all’organizzazione di un tribunale speciale dedicato a perseguire i reati di violenza sessuale e i crimini contro l'umanità.

South Sudan rebel leader in Juba in bid to salvage peace deal

South Sudan’s exiled rebel leader Riek Machar arrived in Juba on Monday for the first time in a year and held rare talks with President Salva Kiir as the rivals try to salvage a stalled peace agreement. Machar landed in the capital in a Sudanese plane, preceded by two jets carrying a large delegation of around 60 people and security officers from Khartoum, where he is living in exile, an AFP reporter witnessed. Machar’s visit is expected to last two days, and comes as a November deadline looms to form a power-sharing government, a key plank in a 2018 peace agreement that has been delayed by disputes over its terms. Rival South Sudan leaders Salva Kiir and Riek Machar are set for a face to face meeting in the country’s capital, Juba, on Monday in what Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has termed as a significant step towards the implementation of a pre-transition period to a unity government. The last public appearance of the two in Juba was on October 31, 2018, when Machar returned to the capital for the first time in over two years for the commemoration of a peace agreement in a ceremony graced by a host of regional leaders including Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, Ethiopia’s Sahle-Work Zewde, and Somalia’s Mohamed Abdullahi. Una delegazione del National Pre-Transitional Committee è in questi giorni a Roma su invito della Comunità di Sant’Egidio e del South Sudan Council of Churches per colloqui sul processo di riconciliazione nazionale in corso nel Paese. A seguito dell’accordo di pace firmato ad Addis Abeba il 12 settembre 2018 e sostenuto personalmente da papa Francesco, che lo scorso aprile ha riunito a Santa Marta per un ritiro spirituale le principali autorità politiche e religiose sud-sudanesi, nel Paese cresce l’attesa per il lavoro del National Pre-Transitional Committee, composto da ministri del governo di Giuba e da rappresentanti di tutte le forze politiche di opposizione. La delegazione, che ieri pomeriggio è stata ricevuta in Vaticano da mons. Paul Richard Gallagher, Segretario per i Rapporti con gli Stati, rilascerà una dichiarazione alla stampa alle 15 a Sant’Egidio.
