"Quite a few years ago before any of this stuff came out, my younger brother wanted some help buying some carpets to take back to Taranaki," Chris said. "And he drove me down to Onehunga - I'd said I'd give him a hand - and we passed that presbytery, and it was like I was being stabbed in the chest with a brick with a knife on it. Pope Francis has been invited to visit New Zealand by the Māori King, who attended a private audience with the Pope in the Vatican yesterday. His Majesty Kiingi Tuheita Pōtatau Te Wherowhero was accompanied by his wife Makau Ariki Atawhai and his daughter Te Puhi Arik Ngā Hono i te Po. It was his first visit to Rome and his first such Papal engagement, usually reserved for heads of state. Fedor Konyukhov, 66, left Dunedin on December 6 with the aim of becoming the first person to row the Southern Ocean. On Saturday He arrived in the Chilean town of Puerto Williams on Saturday, after rowing 11,500 kilometres from New Zealand to Cape Horn. "I can smell the earth, the grass, the trees, because in the ocean there is no smell," he told Chilean media after his arrival. He described his journey as being just 50 days of relatively good weather conditions, while the other 100 featured storms that included waves of up to 10 metres and wind gusts of 100kmh. (...)

People from different faiths and communities lit candles and prayed during the special mass at St Mary's Catholic Church in Northcote last night.
