CELAM must 'revive Aparecida,' go to peripheries, says its president

(David Agren - CNS)  Peruvian Archbishop Hector Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte called for a "second reception" of the Second Vatican Council as prelates, religious and laity participate in the Sixth Ecclesial Assembly of Latin America and the Caribbean. Archbishop Cabrejos, president of the Latin American bishops' council, or CELAM, also urged participants to "revive Aparecida," a reference to the last Latin American bishops' assembly in Aparecida, Brazil, in 2007. That conference produced a document — edited by Argentine Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis — urging Catholics to focus on evangelization and going to the peripheries in a region already considered overwhelmingly Catholic.
