camer.be

The father of a victim of jailed Australian Cardinal George Pell said on Monday (Aug 19)  he hoped "justice would prevail" as a court prepared to rule on an appeal against his conviction of child sex abuse crimes. Pell, the former Vatican number three, is appealing against his conviction on five counts of sexually abusing two 13-year-old choirboys in the 1990s, with a court due to hand down its decision on Wednesday. The case against the 78-year-old relied solely on the testimony of Pell's surviving victim, as the other - who never spoke of the abuse - died of a drug overdose in 2014. Neither man can be identified for legal reasons. (...)

Lunedì 19 agosto: la giornata del Papa
(a cura Redazione "Il sismografo")

Founded in the 13th Century, the gothic edifice has long been a symbol of national defense, and a famous fanfare, or Hejnal, is still broadcast daily from its 260-foot tower, commemorating the moment a Polish trumpeter was shot by a Tatar arrow while rousing inhabitants against an attack. The three sources said the trip would be announced soon. The late Pope John Paul visited Japan in 1981 and Thailand in 1984. Francis' trip to Japan, which he announced himself in January, will take him to Tokyo as well as the two cities hit by U.S. atomic bombs at the end of World War Two - Hiroshima and Nagasaki. (...)

(Michael Sean Winters) On Friday, I began my review of Jesuit Fr. Jared Wicks' critically important book Investigating Vatican II: Its Theologians, Ecumenical Turn and Biblical Commitment, and I examined the part of the book that dealt with the role of theologians before the council began and in its early days. Today I shall conclude the review. Wicks writes that "by the end of 1962 the council had defined itself as an organ of broad renewal of the Catholic church," and the book essentially explains what that renewal was about and how it was achieved. If you ever studied a history of the Second Vatican Council, you know that it was fortuitous the first document considered by the council fathers (...)

Commonweal
By The Editors - Commonweal is pleased to publish the following open letter about the disturbing rise of nationalism, especially among some Christians, in the United States. While this is not a Commonweal editorial, and none of the editors here had a hand in drafting it, we thought it would be useful for our readers to consider its arguments and claims as they reflect on their political responsibilities in these perilous times.

Each day more signs point to a tremendous shift in American conservatism away from the prior consensus and toward the new nationalism of Donald Trump. This is evident not only in the recent National Conservatism Conference held in July in Washington, D.C., but also in the manifesto signed by a number of Christians who appear eager to embrace nationalism as compatible with Christian faith. Without impugning specific individuals, as fellow Christian intellectuals, theologians, pastors, and educators, we respond to this rapprochement with sadness, but also with a clear and firm No. We are Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant; Republicans, Democrats, and independents. Despite our denominational and political differences, we are united by the conviction that there are certain political solidarities that are anathema to our shared Christian faith. (...)

A rescue ship packed with African migrants is marooned for weeks in the Mediterranean while Matteo Salvini, Italy’s hard-line interior minister, wins political points by refusing to let it dock. But the latest standoff, between the Spanish aid ship Open Arms, carrying about 150 migrants, and Mr. Salvini shows the culmination of Italy’s evolution from a country that anguished over the loss of migrant lives to one that has essentially declared war on the ships that rescue them. The opening salvos by previous, and left-leaning, Italian governments against those ships ultimately led Italian Parliament this month to pass a new security law pushed (...)
